Local solicitor announced as Plaid candidate for Y Felinheli By-Election

As Deputy Leader of Gwynedd Council pays homage to the new Arfon Assembly Member Siân Gwenllian, an announcement was made that her replacement candidate for Felinheli Ward, solicitor, Gareth Griffith will be fighting a By Election on 14 July.

Councillor Dyfrig Siencyn, Plaid Cymru’s Deputy Leader on Gwynedd Council said: “As a Plaid Cymru group of Councillors here in Gwynedd, we have proved Siân Gwenllian’s enthusiasm, commitment and determination in getting things done. It is now time for the constituents of Arfon to benefit from the vibrancy and ‘can do’ approach she brings to the political arena.

“We thank her profusely for her sheer determination and hard work in achieving so much for the people of Gwynedd during her eight years as a Plaid Councillor and wish her all the very best as she moves to her next political role in Cardiff as an Assembly Member representing the people of Arfon,” Councillor Dyfrig Siencyn explains.

A keen community volunteer, Gareth Griffith, has lived in the village of Felinheli for 30 years and is the current Vice Chair of Gŵyl y Felin following a 15 year stint as an active member of the team organising this cultural festival in the village.

The married father of two is a former school governor and has managed football teams in the area for a number of years.

Gareth, said: “I am humbled to be chosen as the Plaid Cymru candidate for Felinheli Ward. I have the passion and experience to further develop my volunteering work within the village, should I be successfully elected as a County Councillor.

“It would be a pleasure to work with Siân and I would feel honoured to develop the successful projects and responsibilities on which she has worked tirelessly during the past few years. Likewise with Felinheli Community Council, I firmly believe that close collaboration is key to our village success as we continue to develop a safe and prosperous Felinheli.”

The solicitor of 26 years would bring a wealth of experience to the table as a Gwynedd representative - Gareth is a former trade Union secretary representing the staff of North Wales Magistrates Courts and has volunteered for many years with the Citizens Advice Bureau. He is also a former GISDA board member, a company offering young people the opportunity to live independently.

Siân Gwenllian Arfon Assembly Member said: “It has been an honour to work for the people of Felinheli here in my home patch, and I continue to serve my fellow-villagers, many who are close friends, at the Assembly. It is with sadness that I end my time with excellent Plaid colleagues at Gwynedd Council, but my successful election as an Assembly Member means that we will continue to work jointly for the benefit of Gwynedd.

“I am delighted that Gareth Griffith will stand as the next candidate to represent Felinheli on Gwynedd Council. He has the experience, the commitment and the ability to represent the people of this Ward. I have no doubt that he will make an excellent Councillor, with the support of his family, Christine and the children.”

Two candidates have been announced in Gwynedd Council’s Felinheli By Election to be held on Thursday 14 July 2016:

Gareth Griffith, Plaid Cymru

Andrew Kinsman, Conservative.
